Tree, Bulb, & Native Perennial Grants
The Dig In! Tree, Bulb and Native Perennial grant supplies daffodil bulbs, native trees, and native perennial plants to eligible schools, municipalities, and community groups in Passaic County to promote habitat restoration and community-wide beautification.
About
​City Green grants plants, and planting supply stipends. Grantees are responsible for the site preparation, planting, irrigation, and maintenance of their projects.
Applicants can request up to 2 plant types for their planting project (Ex. Trees and daffodils OR daffodils and native perennials.). Applicants applying for larger tree and native perennial projects can also apply for small material stipends to support their projects. See details below.
Eligibility
All projects must have:

A minimum of 2 adults committed to the project (project coordinators).

A visible location
-
An identifiable positive impact on the neighborhood
-
Adequate sun and water access for the plants selected.

An appropriate plan for site preparation, irrigation and maintenance.

Commercial for-profit entities
-
Private residences

Grant Timeline
Application Period: June 13th - August 7th, 2026 ​

​Grant Notification: Late August 2026​

Mandatory In-Person Awards Ceremony, Grant Training, and Plant Pickup: October 6, 2026​

​Plant Installation Deadline: November 30th, 2026​
​
​Grant Report Due: December 11th, 2026​

About Tree Grants
Applicants can select from 4 native tree types. Trees come 6 - 8 ft. tall and in 15 - 20 gallon pots with 1 - 2 inch trunk caliper.​​
Site Eligibility: Requires 4+ hours of sunlight and reliable, accessible water source.
Trees Amounts Available:
Community Organizations: 1, 3 or 5 trees
Muncipalities: 3, 5, or 10 trees

Tree Types Available:
American Hornbeam, Eastern Redbud, Pagoda Dogwood, Allagheny Serviceberry
​​​​​​​Supporting Materials & Stipends Available:
-
1 bag of mulch and 1 bag of compost per tree OR
-
For 5+ trees: Up to $250 for site preparation and maintenance (ex. irrigation, fencing, mulch etc.)

About Native Perennial Grants
There are two types of Native Perennial Grants:
1) In-Ground Planting and 2) Pollinator Planter. See below for details.
1.) In-Ground Planting
​Grantees receive native perennial plants in 1 - 2 gallon pots that are ready to be planted. Plant kits are pre-selected by City Green based on site conditions and nursery availability. See "Perennial Plant Kit Information" for full details. Materials and stipends are also available to support projects.
Site Eligibility:

​Requires reliable, accessible water source, prepared weed-free site and long-term maintenance plan.​
Plant Amounts Available:

Herbaceous Perennial Kits:
-
20 perennial plants, 35 plants or 70 plants
-

​Woody and Herbaceous Perennial Kits:
-
12 shrubs and 20 perennials, or 8 shrubs and 12 perennials.

Plant Kit Types Available based on Site Conditions:
-
Full Sun, Wet Site, Shade, and Deer-Resistant (see full kit details below)​
​
Supporting Materials & Stipends Available:
-
20 plants: Up to 8 bags of mulch and up to 8 bags of compost for small and medium kits
-
35 - 70 plants: Up to $250 stipend for site preparation and maintenance (ex. mulch, soil, irrigation, or fencing supplies)​​

2.) Pollinator Planter ​
​​Grantees receive 1 - 3 metal raised garden bed, soil, and 9 native perennial species.
Kit comes with planting education and City Green-led community installation.
​
Site Eligibility
The Pollinator Planter is only available to schools and community organizations without access to workable in-ground soil. The site must receive 6 + hours of sunlight and have an accessible water source to qualify.

About Daffodil Grants
Grantees receive bags of daffodil bulbs in the amount requested. Bulbs need to be planted between November 1st and 30th for best results.
Site Eligibility: Requires 4+ hours of sunlight.

Bulb amounts available:

Municipalities: 500, 1,000, or 3,000 bulbs

Community Organization​s and Schools: 100, 300, or 500 bulbs
