Calling all home and community gardeners! Join us for City Green’s Garden Conference!

This outdoor conference will include a full day of sustainable gardening and homesteading workshops, appropriate for all garden types and skill levels. Workshop topics will include beekeeping, plant identification walks, soil health, container gardening, mushroom-growing, native plants and more - all taught by City Green staff and local community experts!
Workshops include:
Beekeeping 101
with Geoff Tombaugh, City Green's Beekeeper
Join Geoff Tombaugh, City Green’s volunteer beekeeper with 6+ years of experience, in a beginner's beekeeping workshop! Geoff will discuss his journey into beekeeping, basic bee and colony biology, a few tips on avoiding beekeeping problems, and honey collection and harvesting methods.
Easy Family Teas
with Aja Humphries
Join Aja Humphries, a local herbalist, doula and yoga teacher, in a conversation about herbal teas that can be made for the whole family using plants growing in your yard or found at your local market. Participants will identify medicinal plants growing at City Green, learn about medicinal benefits and how to experiment with herbal flavors in teas.
Backyard Composting
with Virginia Lamb of Javas Compost
Virginia Lamb has been designing and teaching composting and gardening programs in and around NJ for over 25 years and currently educates with Java’s Compost and Groundwork Education and Consultation. Join Virginia in a workshop about backyard composting - an easy and inexpensive way to reduce waste while creating a beneficial resource for your yard and garden. Come learn easy ways to get it right!
Dirt Matters!
with Henry Anderson, City Green's Director of Agriculture
Join City Green’s Director of Agriculture, Henry Anderson, in a conversation about the value of healthy soil for our gardens and environment as a whole. Henry will demonstrate ecological soil-building techniques used on the farm that you can apply at home to grow your most abundant garden yet.
Raised Bed & Container Gardening
with Julian Cannata, City Greens Production Manager & Liz Kleisner, City Green's Director of Community Horticulture
Join Liz and Julian Cannata in a workshop all about container gardening. Learn about special consideration for growing in containers and raised beds, make your own take-home potting soil, and watch a raised bed building demonstration by Julian.
Backyard Chickens
with Isabel Anderson, City Green's Assistant Farm Manager and Erik Dobol, City Green's Farm & Garden Associate
Join City Green’s farm team, Isabel Anderson and Erik Dobol, in a workshop about keeping backyard chickens. Visit with City Green’s chicken flock as Isabel and Erik discuss building chicken structures, chicken feeding and care, and tips and tricks for caring for your flock.
Grow Your Own Mushrooms
with Joe Lynch, City Green's Farm Manager and Emily Jacobi, City Green's Assistant Farm Manager
Join Emily Jacobi and Joe Lynch, City Green’s Farm Managers at South Branch Preserve, in a mushroom growing workshop that will cover all of the steps and supplies needed to start growing mushrooms in your own backyard. Emily and Joe will demonstrate how to inoculate and care for shiitake logs and how to prepare and inoculate a garden bed with wine cap mushrooms.
Gardening for Habitat
with Jennifer Papa, City Green's Executive Director and Liz Kleisner, City Green's Director of Community Horticulture
Join Liz Kleisner, City Green’s Director of Community Horticulture and Jennifer Papa, City Green’s Executive Director in a conversation about growing gardens to benefit wildlife habitat. We will discuss easy-to-implement perennial gardening techniques, native plants and their ecological benefits and why gardening for habitat benefits us all - the gardener and our local eco-system.
Getting to the Farm Eco-Center
The City Green Farm Eco-Center is located at 171 Grove Street in Clifton.
Our parking lot is currently under renovation. Please park on Grove Street when you arrive for the event.
