Spring is in full bloom, which means it’s time to start growing in the garden! Each year, in preparation for the spring, City Green organizes and packs up seed kits for teachers participating in our School Grounds network. Through our School Grounds program, City Green partners with schools and teachers in northern New Jersey. We provide resources, learning, and services to enhance the school’s gardens and each classroom's nature-based learning goals.
This year, City Green’s Youth Program Associate Briana Valdez and Urban Agriculture Intern Aleeza Mayorga put together the seed kits with donated seeds. We received donations from 7 organizations, Johnny’s Seeds, Renee’s Garden, Burpee, Herman’s Garden, Sow Right Seeds, Rare Seeds, and Grow Organic totaling about 1400 seed packets! The kits we assembled also include soil, seed trays and pots, a mini lesson and an indoor growing guide. Everything a teacher needs to get their school’s garden started for the season!

Last week teachers came to pick up their seed kits that will soon be planted by their students from 54 local schools within the School Grounds network. With these seed kits, teachers are equipped with everything they need to begin gardening this season. Some classes have already seen their plants start to sprout!

City Green’s School Grounds Network provides local educators with year-round resources and learning in support of their school’s gardening activities. City Green provides participating educators with seed kits in the spring and fall, monthly virtual school garden office hours, in-person workshops and community building opportunities, and an online-members portal with lesson plans, garden calendars, and more. This year, there are 54 schools participating in the School Grounds Network, including 4 new garden partner schools: Paterson School #21, Paterson School #25, Wildflower Homeschool Collective, and Paterson STEAM High School.
Thank you so much to our generous donors! We can’t wait to see all of the school gardens continue to grow!
