Our Mission
City Green works to facilitate the creation and expansion of urban community gardens and communal green open spaces in Northern New Jersey’s cities to enrich the lives of inner city residents, while cultivating education in public health, nutrition and the environment. City Green offers practical, technical and financial support to community members of all ages to design, create and manage these urban green spaces. City Green promotes social justice and environmental equality through these greening efforts.
Our Vision
City Green, Inc. envisions livable, green urban communities that are socially, economically and environmentally rejuvenated. Because of the community garden and greening projects carried out by the community with the help of City Green, residents have access to bountiful fresh produce; youth have volunteer, work, and leadership opportunities in the community; and neighborhoods have welcoming, safe, natural respites that are a focal point for sociability, community involvement, cultural expression and individual empowerment.
What is a Community Garden?
A Community Garden is a public garden created by a group of neighbors interested in turning a vacant lot into a beautiful, blooming productive space. The garden can serve many purposes, but most importantly, your group decides.
A community garden can be a chance to grow fresh organic food for the gardeners, their families and neighbors. Extra produce can be donated to local food banks or given to your neighborhood’s senior citizens.
A community garden can be a gathering space; a safe, pleasant place for families and neighbors to come together to garden, chat, organize and celebrate. It is a place to seek shade from summer sun, and relax and enjoy nature right in your neighborhood.
The garden can host all kinds of events from birthday parties to summer concerts, barbecues or theater productions. For young children it is a place to play and explore nature; for teens it provides a unique opportunity for young people to work alongside adults on a cooperative project. It is a chance for them to learn valuable skills, express artistic talents or just be part of a community beautification effort.
